Where does Hurts rank among Eagles' backup quarterbacks in their starting debuts?

Jalen Hurts has now joined a long list of backup quarterbacks who made their Eagles' debut over the past 20 seasons.

For most of them, it was merely a rare start as a career backup. But there were a few who turned their strong performances into a future starting job. And one, Nick Foles, who showed that he ultimately could become a Super Bowl MVP.

But Hurts got off to a promising start replacing Wentz. He led the Eagles to a 24-21 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, throwing for 167 yards without an interception, and running for 106 more.

"One of the things that Jalen did well, when he was out of the pocket and there was nowhere to run or nowhere to throw, is that he threw the ball away and that helps your offensive line," Eagles coach Doug Pederson said.

Sometimes, that's enough from a backup. Here, then, is a ranking of Eagles' backup quarterbacks in their Eagles debuts:

Mike McMahon tries to elude a Giants tackler after taking over for Donovan McNabb in the 2005 season.

10. Mike McMahon, 2005

McMahon took over for Donovan McNabb, who had hernia surgery. McMahon was not good. He went 18-for-39 for 298 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the Eagles' 27-17 loss to the Giants on Nov. 25. By then, the Eagles were in free fall as wide receiver Terrell Owens was kicked off the team less than a year after leading the Eagles to the Super Bowl.

McMahon went 2-5 as a starter, and that convinced head coach Andy Reid that he needed a solid backup QB.

Vince Young took over for Michael Vick for three starts in the 2011 season.

9. Vince Young, 2011

Young was one of the much-heralded "Dream Team" free agent signees who turned out to be busts. Young got his chance on Nov. 20 when Michael Vick was out with an injury. Young went 23 of 36 for 258 yards with 2 TDs and 3 INTs in a 17-10 win over the Giants.

But the Eagles lost the next two games under Young, including a game in which Young threw for 400 yards. Young threw 8 interceptions in those three starts. He never played in the NFL again.

8. Koy Detmer, 2002

Koy Detmer replaced Donovan McNabb in 2002, but suffered an elbow injury in his first start.

This was supposed to be Detmer's coming-out party after McNabb broke his ankle against Arizona. The Eagles, with Super Bowl aspirations, had six games left, and Detmer was going to be the starter the rest of the season.

Detmer's first start, in fact, was going great. He led a 38-17 win over the 49ers on Nov. 25, going 18-for-26 for 227 yards with 2 TDs.

But Detmer injured his elbow in the third quarter, and missed the rest of the season. He never got another chance (see below).

Mark Sanchez scrambles against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season. Sanchez started 10 games for two seasons with the Eagles..

7. Mark Sanchez, 2014

Sanchez was magnificent in his first game starting in place of Nick Foles, who separated his shoulder the week before against Houston. Sanchez went 20-for-37 for 332 yards and 2 TDs in the Eagles' win 45-21 over Carolina on Nov. 10.

But Sanchez couldn't keep it going after a 33-10 Thanksgiving Day win over the Cowboys. The Eagles lost 3 of their last 4 games and missed the playoffs despite finishing 10-6.

Kevin Kolb was the Eagles' second-round pick in 2007. He made his first NFL start in 2009.

6. Kevin Kolb, 2009

Kolb was the Eagles' second round pick in 2007, but had to wait until his third season before getting a chance to start in place of McNabb. Reid made sure Kolb used his arm. Kolb attempted 51 passes, completing 31, for 391 yards and 2 TDs along with 3 INTs in a 48-22 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 20.

Kolb started two straight games, and that convinced Reid to trade McNabb the following spring.

Nick Foles made his NFL debut against the Cowboys on Nov. 11, 2012.

5. Nick Foles, 2012

Long before Foles became a Super Bowl hero for the Eagles, he was an overwhelmed rookie taking his lumps against Washington on Nov. 18 while replacing an injured Vick.

Foles went 21 of 46 for 204 yards and 2 INTs in the Eagles' 31-6 loss. But Foles did lead a last-second game-winning TD rally later in the season. He also replaced Vick the following season and had one of the best seasons for a quarterback in NFL history.

That, of course, was a prelude to what Foles did in 2017, replacing Wentz and leading the Super Bowl run.

Eagles' Jalen Hurts (2) lowers his head as he tries to sneak into the end zone during a two-point conversion attempt Sunday, Nov. 1, 2020, at Lincoln Financial Field.

4. Jalen Hurts, 2020

Hurts wasn't flashy throwing the ball. But he led a victory over the Saints, who came into the game with the top-ranked defense in the NFL, a 10-2 record, and a nine-game winning streak.

As Saints coach Sean Payton put it: "He hurt us ... Obviously, we didn’t do a good enough job of slowing him down."

Jeff Garcia led the Eagles to a 4-1 record while replacing an injured Donovan McNabb in 2006.

3. Jeff Garcia, 2006

After McMahon's disastrous experience, Reid signed Garcia to be McNabb's backup, and that move paid off when McNabb tore his ACL against the Titans. The following week, on Nov. 26, Garcia started against the Colts and Peyton Manning.

That didn't go well for the Eagles in a 45-21 loss, but Garcia went 19-23 for 140 yards. He followed that up with 5 straight wins to end the regular season and secure a playoff berth.

Before long, there was talk about Garcia replacing McNabb for good. Reid, however,  allowed Garcia to leave as a free agent.

A.J. Feeley, shown in 2007, was the Eagles' third-string quarterback in 2002, when he replaced Donovan McNabb.

2. A.J. Feeley, 2002

After Detmer's injury, the Eagles turned to Feeley, the third-string QB. Feeley's first start, on Dec. 3, was a rough one. He went 14-for-30 for 181 yards in an ugly 10-3 win over the St. Louis Rams.

But that was the first of four straight wins for Feeley as he held down the fort while McNabb returned for the playoffs. The best part about Feeley's play is that the Eagles traded him to Miami for a second-round pick.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick (7) scrambles out of the pocket against the Arizona Cardinals during first quarter action at Lincoln Financial Field on November 13, 2011.

1. Michael Vick, 2010

Kolb was all set to begin his career as a starter. But he suffered a concussion in his first game, and Vick replaced him. Vick then made his first start after serving 2½ years in federal prison for running a dogfighting ring.

Vick went 21 of 34 for 284 and 2 TDs in a 35-32 win over Detroit on Sept. 19. He was a candidate for the MVP award until faltering in the final two games of the season.

Report: Eagles lose another O-lineman

Rookie Jack Driscoll's season is over after the right tackle suffered a sprained MCL, the NFL Network reported Tuesday. Driscoll was injured in the first half of the Eagles' 24-21 win over the Saints on Sunday, but still played the entire game.

That was Driscoll's fourth start of the season. It's expected that Matt Pryor will take over for Driscoll. That will make for the Eagles' 13th different offensive line combination in 14 games.
